Mostly original 1968 Mercury Cougar for sale showing 78,600 miles. This California preservation car was purchased new at Isakson Motors in Santa Rosa and still has one of its original dealer license plate frames (not installed) and the owner's manual with the original owner's name in it.
It's a quintessential California rust-free example that is highly original and unmolested, it even has its original black and gold license plates.
The original 289 cubic inch V8 starts and runs smoothly. We rebuilt the carburetor, replaced the plugs, and took care of a few odds and ends but all in all, it's highly functional. It appears to have its original, untouched engine and we believe the 78,000 miles are more than likely accurate so the car would have been designed for leaded gasoline.
It smokes a bit at start-up and periodically so we believe the rings are worn from the use of unleaded fuel. Some additive may remedy this but ultimately the rings may need to be replaced. You can see the car running in the video and it isn't bad. It shifts nicely and the braking and suspension feel good. The car rides on an older set of Kumho P215/70R14's with plenty of treads.
Outside it looks nice. It has had one repaint in its original Wellington Blue Metallic several years ago that still has a nice shine. Most trim, glass, and plastic appear to be original. The inside quarter panels look very good. There is no rust on the car.
The Light Blue Crinkle interior appears to be mostly if not all original including headliner, visors, seatbelts, interior panels, seating, and even the rugs. The headliner is in beautiful condition the seats are in surprisingly nice shape for the age of the car.
The dash looks good except for the radio grill area has cracks in the center. An aftermarket Kenwood cassette player with a CD changer was installed many years ago along with speakers in the rear shelves.
This is a good opportunity to own a low mileage, mostly original and unmolested California Cougar. Contact Donn with questions, shipping, and financing options.
