This is a nicely sorted, honest 1965 Mustang Coupe that’s lived its entire life in California and still wears its original black-and-gold California license plates. Factory specs include a San Jose build dated February 18, 1965, the desirable 289ci V8 (2-barrel, 200 HP) backed by a C4 automatic transmission, 2.80 rear axle, and a black vinyl interior.
No hype, no nonsense—just a good-looking, well-maintained early Mustang that’s been refreshed where it counts and driven sparingly. Includes owner manual, both original black and gold license plates and a clean, California title. The car was purchased in 2013 by its most current owner who has added around 12,000 miles over the last 13 years and used gently and tended to as needed.
The exterior presents very well. It was repainted not too long ago in its original Wimbledon White and shows a smooth body with a deep gloss, with only minor, honest wear consistent with use. It sits on stock 14-inch steel wheels with OEM hubcaps and an older set of Hankook Optimo radial tires that should be replaced due to age.
Mechanically, it’s been recently gone through. Recent service includes a new distributor cap and rotor, ignition coil, exhaust flange gaskets, and assorted maintenance items. It has a newer battery from July 2024, fresh hoses, a new air filter, and a nicely refreshed engine compartment.
Cooling has been upgraded with an aluminum radiator, and the 289 Cubic Inch V8 starts easily, idles smoothly, and pulls well. The C4 automatic shifts cleanly, braking is responsive, and the suspension feels solid and confident. The engine compartment shows well after a recent cosmetic refresh.
The undercarriage is original and solid. A new muffler will be installed prior to shipping. Please note that the undercarriage photos were taken prior to the engine refresh and installation of the new aluminim radiator.
The interior is clean, comfortable, and largely original, showing typical, honest wear. It features good carpeting, nice door panels and cards, a new steering wheel, a new gauge bezel, and all gauges working properly. Both the driver and passenger front window regulators have been replaced and roll smoothly. The car is comfortable even on longer drives, with a functioning heater, defrost, lights, wipers, and gauges. The original AM radio is currently inoperable, but otherwise everything works as intended.
The trunk is tidy and finished with a new OEM-style factory mat, and it includes what appears to be the original bias-ply spare tire. Rear quarters and rear panel are straight with no signs damage.
This is a good, straight, nice-driving 1965 Mustang that hasn’t been over-restored or messed with. It’s been cared for, lightly refreshed, and kept largely stock—right down to the original California black plates. A very easy car to own, drive, and enjoy while classic Mustangs continue to hold their value.
