Fun little 1961 Nash Metropolitan Coupe for sale. The Series IV was the last of the Met and had a few improvements over its earlier versions such as the external decklid and upgraded 1500cc engine.
After 57 years this little car still retains quite a bit of originality! A good car for someone who admires the patina of a well-loved classic or an excellent candidate for an enthusiast that enjoys making them look new again. Either way, this one has good bones and the provenance of living in California from the beginning to go along with it.
The body is in overall good shape with some scuffs and dings that any 57-year-old would expect. It has been repainted in it's (close to) original yellow quite some time ago and there is no rust to be found anywhere including its solid little undercarriage.
The chrome is original along with the glass and I suspect even the rubber. It's what we'd call a "good 20-footer". Get any closer and it's age and character become more evident. Regardless, this car got more "thumbs-up" and smiles last week when I took it out than a near-perfect classic I have worth 20x what I'm asking for this one!
The interior is much like the exterior. Mostly original and seats that were dyed many moons ago by an amateur. The carpet is fine in the rear yet the front is non-existent on the drivers' side. I must say, this little Met would be a good candidate for a fresh interior. Perhaps that could wait for winter so she could get a little bit of summer cruising in while the weather permits.
The car starts; runs and drives well. The shifting is good and it brakes fine. The engine runs smoothly and cool with plenty of oil pressure and doesn't smoke. The day I took these photos it was in the low to mid 80's and this little Met idled for well over an hour and stayed nice and cool.
Oil pressure is excellent, around 45-55 PSI. The water pump bearings are a little noisy so we ordered a new one and will deliver to its new owner installed.
This is a fun Nash Metropolitan that has done well being in California it's entire life and should be a great, fun car for its next caretaker.
