1953 Packard Caribbean Convertible for sale styled by Dick Teague. This still mostly original example left the factory in Polaris Blue with a blue and white leather interior and white cloth top.
It is equipped with its 327 cu in 5.4L 4-bbl. L-head "Thunderbolt" 180 hp 8-cylinder motor, optional power windows, power steering, power brakes, power convertible roof, radio with power antenna, heater, automatic transmission, and chrome Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels with wide whitewall tires. This lovely old Caribbean has been under the same ownership by a collector since 1985, and garage-kept. It shows 80,671 miles, likely to be original.
The 327 cu in 4-bbl. L-head "Thunderbolt" 180 hp 8-cylinder motor runs quietly and smoothly with plenty of power and burns clean. The automatic transmission was recently serviced. It shifts through the gears effortlessly.
Steering and braking are smooth and responsive. It rides on period-correct wide whitewalls on Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels. Recent work includes new window rams, rebuilt power brake master cylinder & servo, rebuilt hydraulic pump, Window switch, new battery, thermostat & gasket, and top radiator hose, transmission service, oil change, and rear-end fluid change making it a nice driving car ready to enjoy.
The exterior appears to have had one consumer-level respray in the distant past, probably in the 1980s. Much of the chrome is original, some looks to have been replated and some will need attention.
The cloth top has aged but works properly and fits well. the car is best described as a good 10-footer and some light cosmetic restoration could certainly take it to the next level. the floors are solid and straight. There is a very small amount of minor rust on the lower driver's door area, see close-up photos and video.
The interior still has its original paint, sun visors, door panels, and cards. The seats appear to have been recovered on an as-needed, where-needed basis over the years.
The carpet also was replaced many years ago. Currently, the windshield wipers are not operational. We recently replaced the power window switch and window rams along with the power vacuum pump being rebuilt which allows the windows, top, and power seat to function properly. While there are a few odds and ends that need attention, overall the car is highly functional and can be enjoyed as-is.
