Super lovely and tidy 1946 Mercury Eight for sale. Beautifully restored by its current long-time owner and finished in cream with an attractive brown multi-tone interior. The owner initially built the car to use for-hire at weddings, and other functions, though he ended up only using it as a personal classic.
This cool Mercury starts, runs, and drives beautifully. It has a rebuilt 302 V8 with an Edelbrock intake manifold and carburetor and matching air filter housing and finned valve covers, electronic ignition, modern wiring, and auxiliary cooling fan with shifting via three-on-the-tree. It is equipped with a Ford 9-inch rear end and an excellent, deep-sounding dual exhaust system. This old Merc is solid, strong, and a great-driving car all around.
The body is stunning and straight with little or no filler. The car was heavily disassembled for paint, and the cream-colored finish is smooth and attractive, with much attention paid to the fitment. The chrome was redone and looks magnificent, along with the trim, glass, and rubber. It has a beautiful set of Coker whitewall steel-belted P215/75R 15 radials wrapped on painted and pinstriped steel rims with half-moon chrome hubcaps. The overall appearance is fantastic.
Inside the car is a beautiful, tasteful interior, mildly custom while respecting the original spirit of the '48 Merc. It is finished in multi shades of browns and tans and has a great sound system mounted discretely in the glovebox.
Additional gauges for temperature, volts, and oil pressure are mounted below the left side of the dash, as well as a working, vintage aftermarket blinker switch with front lamps hidden behind the grill. There are two illuminated toggle switches at the lower right; one is a master switch for the stereo the other for the fan.
As a fair-weather car, the wipers are not hooked up, and the note that the clock is inoperable. Otherwise, all systems function well. The original steering wheel is in excellent shape, and of course, this Mercury has a ton of interior space for its passengers.
This is one beautifully restored Mercury Eight that includes a clear, California "Taxi" title. This was done since he intended to use it commercially though he never did.
