Very unique 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe Convertible for sale beautifully finished in Maroon with tan top and interior. This special Chevrolet was built by and has been with the same owners for over 46 years. It was purchased as a basket-case and restored over a period of several owners, completed around 2001. It was built to drive and even driven 6000 miles to attend the Street Rod Nationals in Louisville Kentucky. It has shown in many car shows up and down the West Coast and has just 27,695 miles since its completion.
This full body-off restoration still shows beautifully after nearly 20 years. The paint is smooth as glass and the body is straight and tidy with nice chrome, stainless, trim and glass, The top shows a little discoloration though it seals up nicely and fits well. Overall this is a great looking car with a nice stance and great curb appeal.
This vintage Chevy was built to drive and it drives wonderfully! It is powered by an inline straight 6 cylinder engine, a 1964 261ci Chevrolet truck motor that has been bored to 271 cubic inches with hydraulic lifters has Ross 9.5 to 1 Pistons, 1957 cylinder head with polished ports and big valves, 3/4 inch cam hydraulic lifters, Solid State ignition, balanced aluminum flywheel and electric cooling fans to keep it running cool.
It puts out plenty of power and coupled with its 5-speed manual floor shift unit from a Chevrolet S10 pickup and the 1984 Chevy Blazer rear-end with positraction the gearing is brilliantly perfect for climbing steep hills or flying down the interstate with the cruise control on driving comfortably at 2450 RPMs at 70 MPH. It dyno'd at 157HP at the rear wheels at 4500 RPM.
Handling is excellent as well with Chassis Engineering cross member allowing it to use all Mustang II suspension and 11-inch disc brakes. The brake rotors were drilled to the 5-bolt Chevrolet pattern to match the new rear end. A Thunderbird rack & pinion was installed and tube shocks. It has modern wiring and is a 12-volt system with an alternator and electronic ignition. It rides on a set of color-keyed 15" Corvette Rally wheels with classic chrome Chevrolet hubcaps and trim-rings wrapped in Michelin X radials P215/60 R15 all around.
Tires have suitable tread yet should be replaced due to age before any long trips. It has ample stopping power with 11-inch front disc brakes and drums in the rear.
The interior was beautifully and tastefully finished in high-quality materials with tan leather, supple thick carpeting, beautifully refinished faux wood grain dash, and a super rare single-hand steering wheel. It is nicely optioned with Vintique heating and ice-cold air conditioning cleverly vented through the radio grill, cruise control, and a modern single DIN stereo in the glovebox.
The factory gauges are in working order and a modern RPM gauge has been installed below along with an amp meter. The powertop is in working order (though it needs a slight push to head downward). The clock does not work. The trunk is nicely finished with the battery at the rear.
